About the Work

“Koi no Yokan (2021) is a large-scale reclining female figure painted on tarp, the artist’s first work of its scale and a pivotal expansion of material and spatial practice. The composition, able to be experienced both horizontally and vertically, presents a cubist-expressionist body rendered primarily in white, where form emerges through fragmentation rather than outline. Accents of green, red, yellow, and peach are layered into the figure, introducing a quiet chromatic pulse that anchors the abstraction in bodily presence. Across the upper field, the phrase KOI NO YOKAN appears in blue and red, referencing oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, introducing a conceptual undercurrent of anticipation and embodied intuition. The Japanese expression, often understood as a premonition of love, extends here beyond the personal into the collective and ecological, positioning love as both imminent and expansive. The work reflects an early curatorial sensibility that later informed exhibitions featuring artists such as Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Keith Haring. Within The DANCE: Between Polarity, the piece operates as a threshold work, where scale, language, and body converge into a state of becoming, held between intuition and form.”
